York Minster Heritage Quad: scaffold design

Project type

Listed religious building

Location

York

We're providing temporary works scaffold design services to our colleagues at Simpson Construction to enable the creation of these state-of-the-art facilities in the centre of York for York Minster. This is a amazing opportunity to contribute to the heritage of our city and one of York's most visited complexes.
Both the Heritage Quad and The Works and Technology Hub at the Grade I listed York Minster provide high-spec modern facilities for craftspeople including Minster stonemasons, and provide training in state-of-the-art digital facilities.

Assisting B&D Contractor Simpsons in the delivery of the temporary works and CDP elements on this fantastic project for York Minster shows we are engineers who understand the buildability of a project as well as having the skills to develop concepts and designs.

Our works not only involved delivering the specific CPD elements of the scheme and associated temporary works, but our input allowed us to identify many areas where the permanent work was over-engineered and challenging. Through dialogue and site meetings with the permanent works engineer and Simpsons, we were able to instigate and inform considerable developments in the design that enabled a far more efficient and safer scheme to be implemented. This ultimately avoided considerable areas of underpinning being necessary; we did this by slightly adapting the floor slab design and enabling the floor slab to be utilised to enhance the foundation of the existing wall rather than surcharging the wall and thus needing it to be underpinned, which would have been a considerable challenge and also created a risk of encountering archaeological interest.
