Marjorie Waite Court: design for extra care facility
Location
York
Project type
Structural and civil engineering for extra care
We produced the civil and structural design for this major refurbishment of a local extra care facility. The previous site comprised a sport hall, community centre, and the care home. The site was extended and refurbished to create a multi-storey extra-care assisted living home with more apartments and a sports hall. Four further bungalows were designed and built too.
Originally built in 1989, Marjorie Waite Court is situated just off Burton Stone Lane, next to Burton Stone Community Centre. It is a sheltered housing with extra care scheme offering high-quality and beautiful one- and two-bedroomed apartments near the city centre.
Working alongside contractors Hobson Porter and clients the City of York Council, we provided civil and structural design consultancy for the new-build 33 new apartments which formed the extension in 2020.
The project saw us design for four new bungalows and 29 apartments to the existing independent living scheme. We also designed a new community hall as part of the extension.
The new apartments at Marjorie Waite Court are all wheelchair accessible and residents benefit from extra care services. Residents of both the new and existing apartments use refurbished and extended communal facilities. These include a dining facility, a laundry, lounges on all floors with balconies, a hair salon and treatment room, and extra offices to deliver a wider range of services. To support residents’ mobility, an electric buggy store and charging area were designed and built.
